Reflexology

An ancient healing art for today's stress

Reflexology is a non-invasive therapy performed on the feet or hands. It is a science and healing art based on the principle there are reflex areas in the feet and hands that correspond to all of the glands, organs and parts of the body. Reflexology encourages the body to return to balance and promotes self-healing. Using thumb, finger and hand techniques on these reflex areas we can reduce stress, which naturally promotes improving circulation, reducing body tension and enhancing relaxation. We know from tomb illustrations and artifacts that ancient civilizations worked on the feet and hands to promote better health.

Susan is certified in Ingham Method®  Reflexology by the International Institute of Reflexology, the world's leading authority. Not all therapies purported to be reflexology today are real Ingham Method®. This method is not a foot massage or the version offered in shopping malls that can sometimes be extremely painful. If you haven't had Ingham Method® Reflexology performed by a certified Reflexologist, then you haven't truly experienced the wonderful benefits of "clinical" reflexology!  See more about the Ingham Method® difference in our article Comparing Reflexology Methods.

Today, new research studies are revealing the amazing benefits of Reflexology. Research has shown that a reflexology session can promote theta brainwave activity which is the deepest, most restful and healing state. Reflexology has been recommended on Oprah by Dr. Oz and Regis Philbin has shared how Reflexology helped him. It is being used today in many US and European hospitals for pain management.  Some surgeons are recommending it pre- and post-surgery to help speed healing. Studies in Denmark found it to be an effective alternative to treat carpal tunnel syndrome, often eliminating the need for surgery. Many athletes now recognize its benefits for pain management and relaxation to help enhance their performance or to help speed recovery from injuries.

Ingham Method® Reflexology can be performed on almost anyone, no matter what their state of health, and there are no harmful side effects. It will not make any condition worse. Reflexology helps nature to normalize body functions.  A session relaxes the stress that can affect your health.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect in a Reflexology Session?

You'll complete a brief health questionnaire, then recline barefoot in a zero-gravity chair. I'll work each foot, kneading it, loosening and relaxing muscles, tendons, bones and ligaments and stimulating over 14,000 nerve endings. Together we'll identify any tender spots (areas of congestion) and give them extra attention. Throughout the session I'll perform relaxation techniques. In some cases, we may work on only your hands or on hands as well as feet. At the end we may discuss homework techniques for you to perform on your hands to help any problem areas interim to sessions with me.

Will you use any tools?

Only my thumb and fingers are used during a session.  No tools, needles or other devices are involved.

Will it hurt?

Pressure is adjusted to a level at which you are comfortable. The deeper we work the more benefit you will experience quickly, but we will only work at a level that is not painful for you.

Is Reflexology suitable for pregnant women?

The Ingham Method® is absolutely suitable for pregnant women throughout the entire term.  In fact, studies have shown it can be very helpful!  See our Research Information page for more details.

What if I'm ticklish?

Those who are concerned about being ticklish soon discover it's not a problem; however, you may want to try just hand reflexology at first if you're concerned about this.

Why work on the feet instead of the hands if both have reflexes?

Working on the feet is optimal because the reflexes there are larger and easier to reach effectively.  However, if a foot is injured we can work the hand on the same side of the body.
